Japan's PC Workstation Shipments Surpass 100,000 Units in 2000: IDC April 5, 2001 (TOKYO) -- International Data Corp. Japan (IDC Japan) said on March 30 that Japan's unit-based shipments of PC workstations in 2000 increased 33.8 percent to 104,570 units, from 78,165 units in the previous year. The shipments of PC workstations, which first appeared in the market in 1996, grew each year and broke the 100,000-unit line in the fifth year. PC workstations occupy about 60 percent of Japan's whole workstation market, including UNIX machines. Japan's shipments of workstations in units for calendar 2000 increased 11.9 percent to 173,246 units from the previous year's 154,782 units. Sun Microsystems Inc. retained its top position at 31,440 units (18.1 percent in share). NEC Corp. ranked second with shipments of 30,710 units (17.7 percent), IBM Japan Ltd. was third with 25,770 units (14.9 percent), and fourth was Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. with 23,961 units (13.8 percent). Vendors of both UNIX and PC workstations ranked second through fourth. Dell Computer KK, one of the vendors specializing in PC workstations, was fifth with 22,150 units (12.8 percent). For the PC workstation market, NEC shipped 22,860 units (for a share of 21.9 percent), rising to the top position. Dell Computer, which was the third in 1999, rose to second place with 22,150 units (21.2 percent). IBM Japan increased its shipments but dropped in terms of share from 19.4 percent to 18.2 percent. It ranked third with 19,000 units. IDC Japan forecasts that workstation sales will exceed 200,000 units and PC workstations will see sales of about 140,000 units in 2001.
