I don't know if Chinese and Japanese eggplant are the same thing or not. I've heard what I eat called both. I bought some Japanese eggplant seeds a number of years ago and actually got a community garden plot, but that little adventure didn't last long. I got some nice tomatoes and okra, but the eggplant never did anything, let alone grow too big. Soon I found a reliable supply in local Asian groceries. I'd never try to grow anything I could easily buy. Don't have that much of a domestic streak. Actually, I have no domestic streak at all, any more.
