Reading it raises some issues in my mind. On the Taiwan question, it seems to me that the fact that may Chinese want to take over Taiwan indicates that China is not ready for such a reunification. These days, owning additional real estate does not necessarily make a country more wealthy if the people being possessed are against the move. It seems to me that China's objective should be to make the people of Taiwan ask to be part of China. One way to do this would be to deactivate all military instalations anywhere close to Taiwan and focus on business deals and cultural exchange. As it stands, Taiwan is both wealthier per capita and politically freer than the rest of China and thus would not willingly enter into a total merger. At this point, I am sure that the US would defend Taiwan if it was attacked and, under an attack circumstance, the fact that China was willing to attack Taiwan would itself indicate that, on a moral basis, Taiwan was deserving of being defended. Instead if being resentful or jealous of Taiwan, the larger group of Chinese in the mainland would better be joyful that a group of their fellows has found a successful economic /political model. Memories of the old civil war should be fadeing as the people who reached adulthood in the 1940's die off and transfer power to a younger group. As a Country grows strong, it must be cery wise and careful about attempting to project power outside of its own borders and of entering into military competition with its neighbors -- especially if that country does not have a democratic or representative form of government. A problem like this caused WW I in Europe when Germany entered into competitions that freightened her neighboring countries. Just my humble opinion and I am sure many would not agree.
