Lotsa benefits. Generally warmer, lotsa compost (that is what I use on the top 6 or so inches) and excellent drainage. Also, you can cover them easier in very cold wx. I use a very fine open fabric something like cheese-cloth.

I have found that planting less but taking better care of what I plant produces much better results. With 3-6 tomato plants, it is all we need and I once planted a hundred plants and didn't get as much as 3-6. Of course I train them on high fences and treat them right so they REALLY go to town!
