First, Kirk was constantly violating the Prime Directive. Second, there is nothing sacrosanct about states, particularly if they are founded on violence. Third, we are all human beings, with an interest in mutual aid.

This is not to say that invasion is generally recommended, since we cannot be responsible for everyone. But lower levels of intervention might very well be entertained, without much mischief. And there are some things that might require more decisive action, if we are to keep our self- respect as a nation.

Since Star Fleet just made up the Prime Directive, it never seemed to be a problem that they always ignored it when it suited them. When the Self is the prime director, any Prime Directives are simply, self referencing, and therefore meaningless.

"One autonomous entity doesn't barge in and impose itself on another autonomous entity. Period."

Sure they do, if they want to. Who's to say otherwise?

Btw congratulations on your new life of leisure. Perhaps you'll take a pottery class. I fire pots for a gentleman who took up pottery at 65. He's now in his mid 80's and doing great.

Have a good day
Greg

Tim, I know you're familiar with StarFleet's Prime Directive. That's what X is talking about, I think. One autonomous entity doesn't barge in and impose itself on another autonomous entity. Period.

Karen, before I replied I looked at the two responses to your post. Neocon covered my thoughts pretty well. I don't think governments have a special privileged moral status IMO. You say "one autonomous entity doesn't barge in and impose itself on another autonomous entity", but to an extent we are all autonomous entity and any law or regulation (let alone slavery) is an example of one autonomous entity imposing itself on another. True we are not completely autonomous but neither are nation states.

Tim

I LOVE star trek. That is what I mean. Of course I don't have a really noble reason for it. I am merely hoping for comity and reciprocity between nations- I don't want another autonomous entity barging in on us. Best to keep the high ground on this I think.

Great job Kholt. You're hired as my speech writer.
