Dear Ted:

If China wants to do something really stupid, and there is no way we could stop them executing the crew, they will do it. Harming the crew will cause all of the negative results and completely make them into pariahs. Any hope of them joining international groups will go into the dumpster and we will cause them much hardship.

I know that it is quite difficult to lose the crew, but intelligence gathering is not for the faint of heart. There is always a chance that you would be killed on such a mission and their training makes that clear. Hey, if one of the fighters fired a missile at them, it is very probable that they would all die. Doing so, would have led to less problems for the Chinese compared to if they harm them now. The heat of the moment has passed and it would show a callous disregard for international law and custom, to execute them in cold blood or even torture them.

No, the negatives to doing anything are far larger than just being patient. Soon though, the stakes will start to get higher. China will have to chooose between letting the crew go or keep up the wounded front and lose entry into the WTO, weapons into Taiwan, losing many nations from the one China policy they want us and others to go along with, cutting off exports from and needed imports into their country, causing friction within China, and later, increasing dissent within China to the current leadership.

I do not believe that the Chinese government really wants to risk all that to work on this losing situation for them.
