We all agree to be constrained to accede to the laws wherever we are. If we don't we get the laws changed, pay the penalty for breaking the laws, go somewhere else where the laws are more to our liking.

I have a problem with this assumed agreement, esp. in examples like the one we were talking about, slavery. The slave doesn't normally have too much ability to change the law or go somewhere else.
