Bearcat,

We have governments for a reason and I believe it has a role to play in solving problems that will have long term negative affects on this country. I don't believe in it's ability to solve ALL problems.

Here's an excellent post from someone who describes the ripple effects that could result from the California energy crisis.

Here's a joke for you:

What did Gray Davis do to set an example on how to conserve energy? He turned out the lights at the end of the tunnel.

Have a good weekend!
Pat

So - now we have everyone to blame. You seem to think more government intervention is an answer - I believe more government is never an answer.

How do you explain the fact that the government run utilities in California are supplying juice at a reasonable cost and have some to spare? How do you explain the fact that the most powerful nation on earth was built on government controlled power over the last CENTURY?

Market based electric rates are an experiment. Your textbook theories may or may not work in the not so free market electric market that you dream of. Government cost based power production does work and works well. Ask yourself a few questions.

1. Is American Industry strong?
2. Was American industry built on government controlled power?

The independent power generators do not look at the big picture. It doesn't make sense to build only NG fired plants but that is exactly what the generators are doing. Maybe it makes sense if one has a profit motive. LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) has gone the opposite direction. After the oil embargo of the seventies they decided to move away from oil and gas. They didn't want to be dependent on foreign sources of fuel. They increased their coal generation as it is a domestic source of fuel.

What is LADWP doing with their funds? Investing in fuel cells and solar cells. Do you see any independent power producers doing that?

World oil production is peaking. Sometime in the next ten years or so world oil production will begin to decline. What does the market oriented Bush administration want to do? Push for more oil exploration. We are headed for a cliff and Bush wants to step on the gas and try to get there a little faster! His short sightedness will spell disaster in the long run.

We should be looking at the alternates for our energy growth..nuclear, solar, biomass...and it is not a free energy market that will make it happen..no way no how.
