Paul - as a former nerdy engineer myself, I have found it increasingly difficult to make any kind of design tradeoff argument on technical terms to business types. Just recently, I was asked to advise to a company who wanted to acquire technology to fill in a base platform architecture piece. They had two choices - one from an outfit who had a small team of very smart people who understood how to make the architecture scalable, what the pinch points were, and had a great track record of on-time delivery. The other was from a bunch of B players who cobbled together existing ideas in a way which got the job done, sort of, with an exponential expense curve to improve or adjust the design.

Not surprisingly, the good guys wanted almost 3 times as much for their product. The people I was advising basically scoffed at the value of the elegant solution and of engaging with a team that actually understood the problem. The two solutions had similar performance for the immediate need. Why pay more?

I had about the same luck putting the problem into business terms - if the benefit horizon was more than 6 months out, nobody cared.

Sad but true.
