Dave,

You are missing the point. National security has nothing to do with human decency or fairness. We have our vested interests, and we do what we perceive we have to to protect them.

The 300,000 children starved to death in Iraq did not invade or brutalize Kuwait, nevertheless they starved as a cooperative effort of the US and the leaders of Iraq. Either group could have ended the starvation at any time.

The same is true with any other hunger situation in the world. We pay farmers to destroy food that could feed all the hungry in the world. Why?
