Supposing you did any of those things, that would be very nice. On the other hand, if we are not supposed to impose our values on others, what matter if it is privately done, or done by our government. And if it okay to champion the rights of foreign individuals, why should it preclude diplomatic action?

On the subject of shifting, perhaps this misled me:

The point is that we shouldn't impose our values on others. Slavery is an extreme example to illustrate the principle--we should at least take a moment to consider if they want to be freed before we ride in on our white horse to save them. That's all.

I realize that a small portion of the population operates off of principle. I don't expect to convert any pragmatists. I just feel like I need to wave the principle flag every now and again.

I will address the third point momentarily......

Well, affluence generally is helpful, though remote for a lot of countries. But that does not mean that influence has nothing to do with it. Numerous dissidents in the Soviet Union expressed their indebtedness to Radio Free Europe, for example, and the student protesters in Tianenman Square paraded with a replica of the Statue of Liberty. When Ronald Reagan called upon Gorbachev to prove his sincerity by tearing down the Berlin Wall, it was a galvanizing moment. There it was, the final symbol of the Eastern bloc as a prison, having to hold its people in, and subject to the vicious standing order to shoot to kill if anyone tried to escape. The effect was incalculable.........
