You are right, the best interests of the child doctrine (started in Michigan back in the 1970). And your statement also shows loss of due process for the man.

I'll try to find a link to the research on domestic abuse and division of men and female perps. The research was done by a psychologist (female) out of U of Alabama, she is married to a neuropsycholgoist I know.

This is who I was thinking of, Rohling is the wife of neuropsychologist Marty Rohling:
Langhinrichsen-Rohling, J., & Vivian, D. (1994). The correlates of spouses' incongruent reports of marital aggression. Journal of Family Violence, 9, 265-283. (In a clinic sample of 97 couples seeking marital therapy, authors found, using a modified version of the CTS, that 36% of husbands and 53% of wives were classified as severely aggressive.)
