Well, it may have been on autopilot, but I would suggest that having it that way would be negligence on the US pilot's part since he would not have had immediate control of the aircraft, IMO.

But I'm not sure if the autopilot disengages automatically once the pilot goes "hands on".

As for export tariffs, remember that many Chinese parts are used as subcomponents to higher valued US equipment assembled here. So you don't want to hurt US manufacturers until they can develop replacement suppliers.

The biggies here are WTO and PNTR... Those would be quite important statements to make.

But better yet would be if Jiang Zemin, when he returns to China, sets the PLA up to take the rap for lying to him about the circumstances of the whole event.

If proven that the US aircraft was forced down by the PLA plane, and that the general staff lied to Jiang, he could play this in such a manner that actually increases his power and weakens the Chinese military leadership who are challenging him.

But that's a long shot, and we'll probably never know unless it comes to pass.

Regards,

Ron

Still the purchase of the new U.S. army berets from China factories has to be the biggest slap of all!

Why the Pentagon purchased this uniform must use issue item from China when our own hat and cap factories centered in regions like Missouri and Arkansas are disappearing and going out of business is beyond me? Some U.S. manufacturer employing Americans should have been able to make these berets paid with our tax money. So what if the price was a bit higher? This way we keep our folks off of unemployment besides.

Government purchases like this should be kept at home and given the first priority.

Yes New Balance does manufacture in the US, but unfortunately not as much as previously. Their high end mdse. is mostly Chinese. I buy New Balance because of US manufacture and the fact that they offer widths up to 4EE.
