Another interpretation of that chart, is that the pattern since the last real recession (early 1970s) is now broken. That is, we're facing something worse than 1998,worse than 1990, worse than 1987, something investors haven't seen since 1974. Many think that the Nasdaq since 1995 was a bubble, and those data points should be thrown out, as not representative of the longer-term pattern.
