China today agreed to release the 24 crew of the stranded US spy plane amid reports that the US had relented from its hardline position and offered an apology saying it was "very sorry" for the incident.

The US ambassador, Joseph Prueher, today delivered a letter to the Chinese foreign ministry apologising on behalf of the US government, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
