No doubt U.S. got the upper hand.

Just checked back from some Chinese msg boards. They are just thrashing Jiang and Tang into pieces there.

UF:

<1. The crew of the plane
2. Confirmation of our right to continue surveillance flights

Dubya raked them both in. China got some diplomatic-speak bs in return.>

LOL!! Dubya raked in the crew of the plane because he had no choice but to succumb to the demands of the Chinese and issue an apology.. The Chinese said.. "Apologize", Dubya said.. We have nothing to apologize for!!! The Chinese said.. "No Apology, No Crew".. Dubya then changed his tune..Abandoned the Bluff.. and folded his cards and has now said.. "OK, We're Sorry"...

I wouldn't call that diplomatic-speak.. Diplomatic speak was the "lack-luster Regret of the incident" that Dubya and company tried to pass off.. The Chinese were not impressed with the gesture.. And told him to "pack sand".... LOL!!

Confirmation of our right to continue surveillance flights.. LOL!! Was that ever an issue.. It's International Airspace you can do all the Surveillance Flight you want to.. As long as you don't trespass into Sovereign Chinese Airspace whilst doing it..

And in the context of the letter.. The US seems to have admitted that it did enter Chinese Airspace which which may have led to the encounter.. From the text.."We are very sorry the entering of China's airspace and the landing did not have verbal clearance"... Notice, it indicates that the US entered Chinese airspace, AND landing without clearance".. It did not say.. They were very sorry for entering Chinese Airspace, WHILST, attempting to land without verbal clearance".. I don't think the Chinese ever made a statement about "Say your sorry for one of your aircraft performing an "Emergency Landing" at one of our Airports.. I don't think such an incident, would require "An Apology"..

Here is how I think you will hear the outcome of this..

The US will admit that "due to a navigational error, on the part of the crew of the plane".. (like Korean Air 007), The plane accidently wandered into Chinese Airspace. When the Chinese Fighters arrived.. The crew realized their mistake.. and attempted an abrupt course change.. which resulted in the collision of the two aircraft.. So while the result of the incident resulted in a fatal accident.. It was in fact "just a navigational error! So apologies are in order.. We'll pay some bucks to the family of the pilot, and refund the purchase price of the fighter.. You see, everything is better.. We should have just done it a week ago...

You see, everything is fine now..Now you can still deploy that Unicom CDMA system..

Uncle Frank,

"There were 2 big prizes at stake in this game"

Aren't there 3 prizes? What about the plane itself and, more importantly, the equipment on board. So far, it looks like the Chinese got that or, at least, the opportunity to examine it closely. So, they haven't come out completely empty handed.

And have they really confirmed our right to the surveillance flights? We've stated that they will continue but I don't think the Chinese have recognized our right to do so.

Still, it's a good thing that we're getting the crew back without apologizing or renouncing our rights to fly the surveillance flights.

>> Looks like in the game of 5 Card Stud... Geroge W
>> ended up folding...

As the only outsider, as the only whining commie Euro bastard (not to mention a GSM perv, one of my most shameful qualities) I am the only unbiased authority on this thread to declare the winner.

The winner is... the USA.

Why?

Because the neanderthalian, emotionally overcharged cold war relics of the US senate and congress realized that confrontation and toughness is not the way. It fundamentally and systematically works against the US interest. Its stupid.

Other lesson was that when during this crisis the US was looking at their traditional allies, the Western Europeans, they noticed certain level of lack of enthusiasm. Not to say chilliness. And why were the Euros passing sick bags to each other?

This lead to some prompt action. Did anybody notice how amazingly quickly the long grinding great banana commerce war was resolved?

The realization has sunk in the States: the nice guy gets things done, the nice guy gets prosperous in the process.

US ended up as the great winner.
