Dave,

Spreading unsubstantiated rumors is a no-no for an exchange member Wall Street firm and its employees. Most are instructed not to comment on such rumors unless they have been previously published or commented on in or by the media. Some firms are so sensitive about the issue, they won't easily allow the word "rumor" to appear in their communications. Being cited as the source of a rumor is even worse. It usually prompts a call from the exchange to the firm's legal department asking for an explanation.
