You are right. So go ahead the US military, keep sending spy planes to China's border. This time China is just sending a message/warning. Looks like few US people got it. Last time I heard there are only 10 this kind EP-3 spy plane in service. So 1 down, 9 to go. HeHe.

So what governs military aircraft?

Well, the United States has an air defense identification zone that extends 200 miles off our coast. We require that any foreign military aircraft flying within that zone must report in or risk retaliatory action.

That 200 mile limit is for resources, not sovereignty. Russian trawlers are routinely much closer, I think the sovereignty limit that is recognized is 12 miles.
