Some people focus their energy on enviromental issues. Some in an
organization like AI. Some on issues concerning a particular religion. That
does not create separation, that is done in someone's intent, not their focus
on what is most important to them.

You draw a false conclusion.

Not at all. None of what you have cited are immutable characteristics which the individual cannot affect (unless he is Michael Jackson) and on the basis of which it is illegal to discriminate. I said that organizations centered around interests were fine. If an employer says "I don't hire members of AI," you can decide not to take a job from the jerk, or to quit AI. But if he says "I don't hire men" (as NOW said in its early days) there's nothing a man can do about it. He can't change being a man (barring sex changess, which, since they take years, wouldn't do much good toward getting the job).

Being a member of AI isn't something you're born with, it's something you choose.

Being of a given gender isn't a choice. So it shouldn't be used as a basis for discrimination.

Simple.
