Intel Investors - Intel may be selling at the rate of 5 million StrongARM CPUs/year just to Compaq for the iPAQ Handheld computer - by the second part of this year!

I did some work for Intel regarding this product so it's dear to my heart. I also seem to remember Compaq mentioning some time ago that displays were a limiting factor to higher volumes.

Cool. Maybe it will divert their attention from competing with AMD.

What's the ASP for strongarm?

Hi Paul, RE: "Intel may be selling at the rate of 5 million StrongARM CPUs/year just to Compaq for the iPAQ Handheld "

Glad to have you back again.

That's a pretty good ramp-up amount of chips. This is also good news for Microsoft's OS.

Regards,
Amy J

Paul, >Intel may be selling at the rate of 5 million StrongARM CPUs/year just to Compaq for the iPAQ Handheld computer - by the second part of this year!

That is great. I read recently that Compaq said their average selling price for the iPaq was higher than their average desktop. That's partially due to the options people buy with it. Hopefully, the high end price of the iPaq is "shared back" with Intel on the StrongArm chip price.

All it takes is a couple design winds for Xscale in 3G cellphones (which sooner or later will have to happen), and we'll see an extra few 100 million CPU sales per year. Admittedly the margins are lower than Pentium, but then again, the shelf life of the processors is longer as well (compared to CPUs).

I could easily see over 1b$ extra profit (and at least 2-3x that revenue) from their Xscale CPUs into the cellphone market over the next 2-3 years. Currently there is no handheld CPU that can match the price/performance/power of the StrongARM/Xscale.

The Compaq iPAQ sales will be a high visibility icing on the cake.
