The history of religion demonstrates the inaccuracy of regarding it as requiring unquestioning faith. Even for those religions where the adherence to a particular creed is crucial, the proliferation of apologetic and exegetical works belies the assertion. Hinduism and Buddhism are very latitudinarian in doctrine, Judaism requires a minimal creedal formulation, Islam has run a gamut from the most austere fundamentalism to the mysticism of the Sufi. The Christian Churches have harbored great intellects like Augustine, Aquinas, Robert Hooker, and John Henry Newman, and had as at least nominal adherents Descartes, Liebniz, and Hegel. I could go on, but that should suffice for the moment......
