The phenomena of the behavior of believers can be observed, but, imo, has very little (or perhaps nothing) to tell us about the internal experience- i.e. rituals. As for a "sense of sublimity" that's like the blind men and the elephant. I really doubt that my sense is analogous to your sense. (It might be, but there is know way to know, and I don't see any reason to believe it)

It may be that people simply differ in their ability to experience religious knowledge as they vary in other aspects of their lives. For example, I have almost no ability in art. I can't draw worth a hang, despite years of mandatory art lessons in school, both in England and in this country. My wife is an extraordinary artist, and simply can't comprehend that there are people who can't simply draw what they see -- it's so simple and obvious. OTOH, I have been a concert musician for nearly 50 years. She has no ability in music. Intellectually I know she says she simply can't match pitch, but frankly, it's such a simple and obvious thing that internally I really can't comprehend that she can't do it. She is blown away when I listen to one of my daughters practicing a piece I've never heard before, and say from across the room "shouldn't that have been a G-sharp?" It's so obvious to me, so mystifying to her. It may be that understanding of the spirtual is in the same vein. To some people, worshipping God is like listening to music; it's so obvious that it's difficult to really believe that some people don't "get" it. To others, it's totally incomprehensible. Neither can truly commnicate what they know to the other because they simply don't have a shared brain wiring.
