PT: While you would gain a reduction in power consumption from the processor and the PSU (only 70% +/- efficient) there would only be a gain on the noise front if all the cooling fans were thermally controlled. While some high-quality PSU (Antec smartfan, Enermax whisper) have thermally controlled fans most units would just result in a cooler case at same noise level. And I think I have only seen one thermally controlled HSF.

I thought there were several thermally controlled HSF's, but even if that isn't the case, I wouldn't be against making one myself. If the motherboard features a temp sensor, it wouldn't be very expensive (or difficult) to do.

I also am very interested in quiet computer systems (well, quiet OC systems ;-) and have reduced the apparent noise from std operating position of my computer from 58dB to 51 dB at only a slight loss of thermal performance.

What did you do to achieve this drop in noise? Seal the case (internally) with some (noise) insulating material?
