Indifference to whether the universe is, finally, a repository of value or sterile; resignation in the face of the annihilation of all that one particularly cares about; a feeling of self- sufficiency, leading one to reject any notion of grace; the lack of a deep need to see things put right somehow--- all of these seem to me to characterize atheism.
