Buddhism at one time might have been one thing as simple as "a religious, monastic system"- but it is no longer one thing (imo)- if indeed it ever was. Condensing the teachings of Buddhism into "true happiness is to be had only in a state like dreamless sleep from from all desires, free from conscious action" probably make Catholics feel better. If it does I am happy for them as long as they do no harm to their fellow men who are Buddhists based on their belief in what the Buddhists believe. You would probably be better served if you really wanted to know what Buddhism was by at the very least taking your definitions from Buddhists, rather than Catholics. I always prefer to hear a person define his or her self, rather than listen to others define them. It's always better to get the first person account I tend to think.

And if the Chinese Communists loved Buddhism so much they would not have killed so many Buddhists in Tibet, and destroyed so many monasteries, nor would they have made owning a likeness of the Dalai Lama a crime. Saying that Chinese Communists like Buddhism is like saying the right wing republicans like gay cross dressing liberals. It just doesn't fit with what we can observe of the world. But it's very interesting you would say such a strange thing and use such a strange source. I applaud your interestingness. And I thought we'd settled that American democrats were all low educated religious folk, hardly the sort of Americans that go in for Buddhism. You should consult with Ebill and Neocon about this. I believe they have some demographic data that just might rock your world.

FYI:On religion, which the Communist Party dislikes but tolerates within limits,
the report said, ``The government continued to restrict freedom of religion
and intensified controls on some unregistered churches.''http://www.tibet.com/NewsRoom/china's-hr-record.html
