Automatically? Heavens, no. I would, "If someone declares himself to be a fundamentalist," be curious to know how that person felt about imposing his or her religious tenets on those who don't share them. Especially if I liked that person and wanted to be friends.

As I mentioned, "nice" is important to me. I don't think people who want to force their religious tenets down the throats of those of other religions are nice.

Sometimes they do things like throw them in prison. Stone them. Amputate their limbs. Force them to gestate a fertilized egg. Forbid them to pray to their own deities.

I would not automatically "tarnish" someone who calls himself a fundamentalist. I would always want to know what they wish to force others to do before they are ethically "tarnished" in my eyes.
