Kingston Technology Co., Fountain Valley, Calif., Monday announced a new thrust into the server and workstation memory module market, setting up a sales group specifically for this market and cutting prices on such modules up to 45%. Officials said the server and workstation memory market is growing rapidly, and Kingston will focus efforts on custom adaptations to modules for OEMs and resellers.

For instance, Kingston is discussing a license from SiliconGraphics Inc. to provide DDR memory for the SGI Origin 3000 series, a spokeswoman said.

Examples of Kingston server and workstation module price cuts include DIMMs for the Compaq Proliant ML570 reduced by 44%, and modules for the Hewlett-Packard 9000 series, reduced by 50%.

In addition to preparing to supply DDR modules to SGI, Kingston said it will provide the double data rate DIMMS to other server and workstation makers when they introduce systems requiring the new memory.
