To get to the "Canadian side" desk call 1-800-862-9515 and follow the prompts. Probably most of the guys there can get you set up, but you may want to try and get a hold of Sal at first. I've had good luck with them, although they often don't report fills back by phone and you have to follow up.

Trades and commissions: Trades will be converted from US dollars if you don't have CDN already in your account. I feel the exchanges are fair, right now about 1.565-1.57. Use Stockwatch to check bid ask and size. Would caution against market orders. I almost always use limits and all or nones, otherwise you end with little expensive trades. If I'm trying to buy more than US 5K, I will often enter minimum share fills and take the rest as a day order. Never leave a small residual left for the next day.

Here's are few real trades and commissions on various prices (all stated in CDN $);
10,000 Geomaque at 40: $129
1,000 Francisco Gold at 5.25: $70
1,500 Gabriel Res at 2.42: $85
20,000 Birim at 14: $105

Another very good US broker for CDN stocks is penntrade.com They are a bit more expensive but trade directly through CDN exchange bypassing US market makers.

I have heard excellent comment on them
