and establish a new standard before the Japanese companies do? DUHHhh!! Did they really think that digital cameras would go the way of the 3D Steroscopic camera? Now instead. . Kodak is the one going the way of so many other near-sighted old tech companies before them. And it was completely avoidable.

Rande,

The battle over a flash standard in digital cameras is playing out in front of us right now. Compact Flash, Sony's Memory Stick, and Smart Media cards are all battling it out for "de facto" standard. It appears no one company or format will "kill" the others. How profitable companies become off of these products is yet to be seen also. There is a chance flash will become a commodity, depending upon numerous factors that will clear up as time goes on.

As far as the Japanese making all the dough, I disagree. Sandisk owns much or some of the CF IP, depending on how certain litigation and the competitive landscape shapes up. SNDK is a California company, making them very AMERICAN. The royalty stream SNDK earns from CF is under debate right now on the SNDK thread, as well as the pricing in the industry. SNDK is also working on MMC cards (multi-media cards), and SDMC cards(Secure Digital Memory Cards). Both cards may have widespread use soon, in everything from digital videos to music. The beauty of this is that the market for these products is several orders of magnitude larger than that of digital cameras. Dozens of new uses for all these cards is being invented every month. This game is just starting to unfold, and should be watched closely.

Funny, although I just scratched the beginning of the surface regarding flash and digital cameras, and beyond, all I really wanted to say was: SNDK is an American company that may very well be the one company to reap the biggest rewards from the flash explosion that is in its infancy.

The market is slow, sorry for the non-trading related post during trading hours.

Rande, re: digital cameras and your statement..."And I said all that to say this. . . . never underestimate the power of the NEW ECONOMY to change things forever"

I can't tell you how much my Sony Mavica digital camera has changed my business and my life.....I have a nice old regular Sony 35mm camera which took photos of various things which earned me many kudos, but the digital Mavica has made lots more possible for me in terms of convenience, lower cost (no film developing!!) and service to customers/clients.
