Could you please provide a link? I am interested in buying one of these ... but I have not found them. I bought a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 from Dell last week and it runs my applications (floating point double precision) at a great speed, just a fraction of a much more expensive IBM Power3 370MHz (which is 4X more expensive), and faster than 1.3GHz Athlon DDR. My compiler does not use SSE2, just SSE, and I expect another 20% improvement (or more) from SSE2.

The Pentium 4 is a great chip for intensive FP scientific applications. I am afraid that these are not representative of the PC "mainstream."

I think you are overestimating the importance of SSE2. In most situations it doesn't do anything. It is just not applicable. Mainly, in Windows code and in code to Windows APIs and windows DLLs. There will be no SSE2 in those (except possibly in display related drivers) and there would be hardly any benefit.

What P4 needs to overcome the performance disadvantage is to have clock speed that is at least 50% higher than Athlon. Right now, it would be about 2 GHz to beat 1.33 GHz Athlon.

Is 100% more expensive roughly the same?
