e

quite awhile back i posted symantec knowledge base articles for you that were specific to your locked drive problem. ( #reply-15644195 , #reply-15629380 ) basically, the article said to run ndd.exe in DOS. as i recall, your only response to this symantec suggestion was to say that the expert you had helping you "didn't mention 'and run Ndd.exe'..." (that's no surprise, as it is a symantec program, Norton Dick Doctor.)

the article i posted was from the Norton Utilities2000 knowledge base, and i have since determined that you are running nu2001 (nu is the component within systemworks that does all of the defragging and other maintenance tasks). but the recommended solution remains the same.... to run ndd.

so here is the link to the knowledge base article once again, with an excerpted portion for your review. i notice that the piece refers to win95 throughout the text, but the subject header does, in fact, include WinMe.

Error: "Image Error: Volume lock failed..." or "Unknown device locking drive C:"

Unlocking a locked drive
To unlock a drive that may have been locked by another utility, follow these steps:
1. Reboot the computer.
2. When you see the message "Starting Windows 95," press F8.
3. Choose "Command Prompt Only" and press Enter.
4. At the DOS prompt, type:

NDD [Enter]

This will run Norton Disk Doctor.
5. Diagnose the drive with the locking problem.
6. After diagnosing the drive, close Norton Disk Doctor and reboot the computer.

Because Norton Disk Doctor needs to lock the drive, it will then unlock it after it is completed, usually resolving "left over" locks caused by other utilities.

since i alluded to my previous post in which i provided the symantec recommendation, here again is the url for that article, with the excerpted solution...

"To resolve the problem, restart the computer to MS-DOS mode and run Ndd.exe."

hope this helps
