John,

Suppose Intel has capacity to build 150M processors. Now they will invest in .13u, lower the unit manufacturing costs by 1/3 and double capacity to 300M processors. So now Intel has capacity to build 300M processors, and costs like the old costs to build 200M processors. But suppose they only sell 150M processors. The costs will actually go up by 1/3, not down.

Doesn't it seem to you that this is happening?

Joe

John: Seems Intel will have a lower COGS next year, with .13 and 300 mm wafers. What's the impact on competitors?

It would seem to me that even the 30% reduction in production costs (that Intel has quoted for 300mm wafers over 200mm wafers) is not enough to negate the effect of a die size that is roughly 100% larger than the competitors.

AMD will have .13mu as well. They will also be using a "real" low K dielectric (no FSG here!). They will also have a new core out, Intel won't.

There are many pros and cons of both companies - certainly, the situation is all but static. However, listing a few of Intel's steps forward next year without mentioning any of AMD's seems rather silly. Almost as if you wanted to introduce a bit of Fear Uncertainty and Doubt ;-)
