My guess would be that McKinley completely cannibalizes Itanium (Merced), starting late next year. Some call it eating your own young, but putting the old off onto an ice floe sounds more appropo. I suspect McKinley will have so much better performance, infrastructure support (RAS, etc.), and be design optimized for the latest processes, that it will be the overwhelmingly better chip. But I'm walking out onto thin ice here. Ten could chime in with a lot better call here, but probably can't talk about it. We shall see.
