I for one am 75% convinced we will never know what happened.
Here are the possibilities.

1) Some bank was in deep deep sh*t on derrivatives and needed a cash miracle to get out of it
2) Some major brokerage house was so deep under water selling puts that a meltup was required to prevent them from going broke
3) Greenspan is just plain f*cking nuts
4) A major bankruptcy is coming soon and the markets needed to be propped up first

Obviously we will only know if it is number 4 and the news hits soon. Even then we will wonder if was not a combination of factors.
