Johannes,

We choose our Presidents largely on their ability to raise money. Generally speaking, the candidate with the largest coeffeur has the ability to get the last word in in the TV brainwashing wars.

Republicans get their money from the oil industry, gun lobbies, etc. in return for favors. Dems have to be more creative, as none of their native constituencies have a lot of money.

I doubt this is what Thomas Jefferson intended.
