Wasn't that when Barrett took over from Groves?

No, wait, the Cyrix 6x86 showed Intel that there was a low end market...

Edit: Ok, it wasn't really low end on introduction. But it sure was competitive in processing power. Had a few rough edges though.

Another alternative explaination is at spec.org , the date is a closer fit, . Hardware Avail: May-96 . Though there was an earlier version in Jan.

Quite a run it had, too, in its various incarnations.
