Dave,

During my lifetime I have seen countless instances of pollution problems which pitted business vs environmentalists. The story is always the same. Business claims that fixing the problem will make them uncompetitive.

Most of the time the environmentalists have been proven right in the end. Imagine what California would be like had we listened to American auto industry claims that reducing emissions would put them out of business. The air in New Mexico used to be filthy because the electricity generation industry claimed that cleaning up particulate emissions would put them out of business.

Environmentalists are not perfect, but without them this place would be a disaster. We are increasingly faced with serious environmental problems. Fish populations are being decimated. The oceans are becoming uninhabitable for many species. Thousands of terrestial species are becoming extinct every year. CO2 levels are rising at an alarming rate.

BTW: Microprocessor design is a very interesting field. It is not magic, but rather a huge effort of managing details.
