Kap,RE:"
<So $350 does seem about right.>
This is quite desperate on Intel's part. Very significant piece of news IMO. Don't know what to make of it yet"

Either Intel is stupid or someone has their speed grades mixed up. I suspect the 1.5 GHZ P4 will drop to $350, not the 1.7 Ghz. Then a further drop in May. Maybe the 1.7 Ghz drops more then...$350 looks desperate. I agree.

Kap: It will depend on the volume of 1.7GHz parts. If the volume is high, they may succeed in sending AMD into the red this quarter.

If volume is high enough, Intel won't have enough capacity to maintain market share this quarter.

Kap, Re: [1.7 GHz for $350] Very significant piece of news IMO. Don't know what to make of it yet.

Keep in mind that Intel is also ending its Rambus rebate program at the end of the month, so you have to add $60 to these prices to compare them with the old ones. But I agree that with a 1.3 GHz P4 at $192 at the end of the month, AMD could be in trouble. Especially after Sanders reiterated that they still intend to undercut Intel in price at a given clock-speed. So the best solution would be IMO releasing a 1.4 GHz Athlon.

BTW, do you think Palomino can keep up in clock-speed with P4?
