that reminds me...gringo. Years ago in La Paz Mexico, a native told me that at one time there were a lot of US soldiers there. Their uniforms were green. The Mexicans resented them. And so they would say, "green go", which evolved into "gringo". I've never heard any other explanation. Then of course there was the classic Chevy Nova, which did not do well in Mexico because "no va" in Spanish means "doesn't go"

I heard that joke also about 20 or more years ago in a slightly different form:

When Datsun first came on the market, engineers from a german car manufacturer where checking it out and when they found out that the time it took from initial conception to production was less than 3 years, one was overheard muttering 'Dat soon' (german accent).

And since the Japanese had copied the car to a large extent from german car model and thought it was some profound wisdom, that's what they called it.
