IBM runs out of 1GHz Mobile PIIIs theinquirer.net

Speaking of paper launches. . .

Subject: Urgent - Important Information on ThinkPad 1Ghz Models - Update

Dear All,

The latest update on the Intel 1 GHz processor is the following:

Dear all,

We have just been informed by Intel that they have implented a Stop Ship on their mobile
PIII 1Ghz processors.

As a result, we do not expect to get any more of these processors until at least the end of
May. We are still awaiting some official guidance on what we should be saying to
customers, but rather than wait for that - I have listed belowe some points you should
know of right now :

Every vendor, not just IBM, is affected by this news.

On the other hand, paper launching the 1.7 P4 @$350 makes no sense, as it will kill the market for the other parts at current "official" pricing. On the other other hand, maybe Kumar can explain it all.

<So it looks like that this launch is even worse than the 1.13 GHz PIII launch.>

This was my point. If 1.7GHz P4 was launched in volume for $352, the P4 distributors prices would have tumbled two weeks ago, but they are holding steady. Looks like a bullshit launch, total desperation at Intel.

andreas, I just checked DELL and, although it says "up to 1.7 GHz" on the workstation page, it's not in the pick-list.
And now a stop shipment on the 1 GHz PIII notebook chips. Did someone burn their fingers?

Andreas,

You have some friends at ZDNet Germany, right?

In reference to their latest CPU review:

zdnet.de

You might want to explain a thing or two to them:

-> If they list the P4's FSB as 400MHz, they certainly need to list the Athlon's as 266MHz (not 133MHz) etc.
