Kash: what was the last car you bought based solely on performance?

I never said solely, I simply disputed your claim that performance is "way down the selection criteria", as you put it. Of course, with cars performance is more difficult and something like acceleration or top speed is probably not near the top for most buyers. However, other performance characteristics are - handling, braking, traction control etc. are all performance aspects that come into play when deciding which car to go for.

BLOOM 8/2/00 - 3:34 PM... the choppiness we're seeing on a couple of things.first off, he said last week's third quarter profit warning from bell weather -- bellwether nokia put the jitters into investors -- expectations that customers would hold off on buying new phones until new models are available one week after a warning fromhold onto those.he said advanced micro devices is screaming buy and he has a strong buy rating on the stock.

Jim

thank you, I liked that one:

"However, if you instead missed the 30 worst months over that period, your total return would be in excess of $1.8 million!!! To show the proper scale, the "red" bar would have to be 16-times taller than shown on your computer screen. All of which goes to prove that such mathematical "studies" are really just a nonsensical fudging with numbers... and investors' emotions."

Is that like saying but if you buy low and sell high..... :-))
I am not against TA but I went into amati, for example, when it was screaming sell on all charts and it doubled within couple of months and I bought amd few years back when it dropped to single digits and also was a screaming sell. I went into a number of companies that were a screaming buy and it is too painful to talk abot those..... :-))

But the best thing about confidence of ta experts is an ad for ta system for "only" around 40K that I saw few years back. It was said to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and supposed to be developed by best of the best. Not only they sell you a system but you also get guarantee that if you would not double your money based on recommendations within 10 years they would refund your money.

hey, sounds like a great deal:

1) if it is best of the best then invest your money
2) 2x in 10years is only ~7% annually
3) they keep interest if you loose = 40,000
4) would you find them in 10 years to claim the refund?

Regards
-Albert

My technical indicators suggest at $70, AMD is a screaming buy...

What technical indicators do you use. AMD would be considered oversold, but it might also now be considered to be in a dowtrend. I suppose you are looking for support levels?

"screaming sell on all charts."

This may reflect more on your analysis -- or your view of technical analysis of charts -- rather than technical analysis. A stock isn't a screaming sell just because it's moving down or is reaching new lows. When you saw opportunities using FA, a lot of people saw the same opportunities using TA.

If you bought AMD around 10 in the summer of '96, you bought when it wasn't a screaming sell by any means. Nor was it a screaming sell in August of '98, at around 14, nor in Oct. of '99 at around 17.

The same goes for screaming buys. What you imagine to be a screaming buy to a technical analyst, is probably a screaming sell to most good analysts. Just because a stock is shooting up, making new highs, doesn't make it a screaming buy. It's just as likely to be a screaming sell. Heck, look at AMD at 97 in June. Was that a screaming buy? Don't think so. In fact, the signals were saying the opposite.

And if and when AMD fills that gap from March, Monty probably won't say, "See it filled the gap. The stock is dead. Sell." He'll probably be buying, after waiting for a good opportunity to buy low.

But that's enuf outa me. Monty's casting some pearls of wisdom, as the expression goes, about the 200 SMA and AMD, and about gaps, and yet it leads to a fruitless debate about TA. I think he just wants people to proceed with some caution, and not fall too much in love with one stock for too long. I think he's said AMD is a good company with good fundies. But that doesn't mean it can't do what all other stocks do: go up and go down.

Pravin:

My technical indicators suggest at $70, AMD is a screaming buy...Only 3 times previously this year have the technicals shown shown so strongly, and in each case, AMD has rebounded within the ensuing 2 weeks...a minimum of 20% (i.e $14 which would take it to $84)and a maximum of 50% (i.e $35...which would take it to a new all-time high of $105!!!)

Prediction: By August 14, AMD will be somewhere between $84 and $105!!!

NG,

INTC is getting crushed! Revenues down 25% and margins on that down 12%! A double compounded whammy! Can you spell haemorraging? (Maybe I can't :-)).

The Athwiper has turned into a veritable Intel Athkicker!!

Our friend Athhook was right about roadkill, but he got it completely backwards! Let's hope his reputation and ego will deflate a little. I seem to recall him saying Intel was oversold at low $50 and screaming BUY!!

Another one for the reputation and ego deflation is Abby Cohen. Just this week she told everyone to BUY!!

Neil.
