I've also puzzled over that one before George. And I suppose the real conflict is not necessarily in some evolution taking place, but in how it all began. In other words, is all life on earth just some random event in the cosmos which occurs occasionally. Or, are we a product of divine intervention? Further, is the entire universe a random event, or has it been created from the hand of God? It's my understanding evolutionists have taken Darwin to the next step. Thus the conflict between "Intelligent Design theory, and evolution. Here's an interesting passage to ponder over. Which one of these makes more sense? "In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God, he was with God in the beginning. And through him all things were made. Without him nothing was made that has been made, in him was life, and that life was the light of men." Or.... "In the beginning were the particles, and the impersonal laws of physics. And the particles somehow become complex living stuff on their own power, assisted only by the laws. The stuff imagined God, but then discovered evolution." Best, Mike

That is a position held by many folks I think... I even have held it to some extent. But in the end the greater question becomes: What is the motive force behind the creation and evolution of life on Earth? Here is a statement made by a man named David Hull in the scientific journal "Nature": What kind of God can one infer from the sort of phenomena epitomized by the species on Darwin's Galapagos Islands? The evolutionary process is rife with happenstance, contingency, incredible waste, death, pain and horror.... The God of the Galapagos is careless, wasteful, indifferent, almost diabolical. He is certainly not the sort of God to whom anyone would be inclined to pray. So there are those on both sides of the argument who see the evolution point as being about more than the simple mechanics of creation, but evidence of its motive force. Of course your question is as sensible when asked to mister Hull as to a theologian arguing for creation... Something that has perplexed me for many years is why evolution and theology pose any contradiction at all. If there be a god, who are we to decide the way creation SHOULD have occurred or developed?
