Silicon Graphics Gets Sony Order, Unveils Workstation

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) said in a press release Monday that it sold 100 Octane 2 visual workstations to Sony Corp.'s (SNE) Sony Pictures Imageworks unit.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Separately, Silicon Graphics said it unveiled several products including a Windows Operating System-based workstation called Zx10 VE visual workstations and its StudioCentral Library 3.0, which is a digital asset management system for enterprise-wide deployment.

Seven-year search for Itanium

On May 29, after seven years of hard work by thousands of people in the two companies, the new chip will be launched. Called Itanium, it is the first of a new generation of computer chips that should deliver vastly more power and efficiency than today's models and become the mainstay of Intel's technology for the next 15 years or more.
