Chuck: That AMD sold all the Athlons it could sell is a joke that keeps perpetuating every quarter - especially when it is clear that Fab25 is nowhere near full utilization and that AMD is holding considerable amount of inventories. It might be a little bit more believable if one says Athlon output from Dresden is "sold out"

I did say "Athlons", not K7s ;-). I do believe that Dresden Athlons were, more or less, sold out.

You suggest they could have ramped Dresden faster. Well, I'm not so sure. AMD has no interest in waiting longer than absolutely necessary to get the remaining .18mu equipment up and running at Fab30. However, there is a limit to how much .18mu equipment they will want to install - not all will be useable for .13mu production.

I see a significant cost delta between Athlon and Duron solutions at any given speed grade so I am not sure what you define as "minimal" and I am not sure where this discussion is headed

Ok, let me demonstrate&#133
                           DELTA/100MHz
Athlon 1.20GHz $176
$35
Athlon 1.10GHz $141
$10
Athlon 1.00GHz $131
$29
Athlon 0.90GHz $102
$24
Athlon 0.85GHz $88
---------------------------------------
Duron 0.90GHz $90
$36
Duron 0.85GHz $72
$38
Duron 0.80GHz $53
$16
Duron 0.70GHz $37
DELTA100 is the extra cost, normalized to 100MHz (i.e. double the difference when the frequency delta is only 50MHz).

The incremental cost of going with Athlon over Duron is really quite minimal. Additionally, the incremental cost of extra MHz (once you pay the slight Athlon premium) is even lower than for the Duron!

You could compare this to PIII vs Celeron, but that's not really what I was doing - I was simply looking at AMD solo.
