Money is bound up with religion.

But Christianity is the religion of poverty. Just ask them. They'll tell you!

Money is bound up with religion. Countries become wealthy because "God" wishes it. Countries enslave people to become wealthy because "God" has ordained it. And so on. Self reinforcing systems. Not easy to separate what is the prime mover. "God" and religion and the fat church certainly plays a big role.

People and countries have enslaved others because they wanted power and money. God was an easy excuse. If everyone was an atheist they would have had to come up with another excuse but I don't think they would have had to much dificulty.
