Sources say that Dallas, Green Bay, Miami, Philadelphia and Washington are among the teams the Bears have spoken to about striking a deal. Detroit and Kansas City are also believed to be interested. Washington head coach Marty Schottenheimer confirmed that the Redskins rejected a trade for McNown, saying he didn't believe the fit was right. The Dallas Cowboys also took a pass, opting to stick with rookie Quincy Carter after releasing veteran Tony Banks. One intriguing possibility is Green Bay, where former Bears vice president of personnel Mark Hatley holds a similar position with the Packers. Hatley drafted McNown with the 12th overall pick in 1999 and has contacted the Bears about trading for the third-year quarterback. "I think he is going to be a good player some time or another," Hatley told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He has got some growing up to do. For whatever reason he hasn't fit into whatever they want down there." Rumors of a possible McNown deal first surfaced after last Saturday night's preseason game in Tennessee. Bears running back Skips Hicks, who played with McNown at UCLA, is helping his friend cope with the unsettling situation. "We talk about it a little bit, but my point is don't worry about it," Hicks said. "You have no control over it. That's up there in the (front) office. If you worry about it, it's going to affect your play. Don't let it affect your play. He knows he's good. I know he's good. Everybody knows he's good. Sometimes people have bad luck. That's part of the game." PROVING HE BELONGS: McNown is expendable in part due to Danny Wuerffel's emergence. The 1996 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida has convinced the Bears he's capable of being the team's No. 3 quarterback by completing 22 of 33 passes for 232 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception in two preseason games. chicagobears.com
