"Am I missing something?"

Yes. You are missing that the Hammers are the best way for AMD to differentiate themselves from Intel. At some point, Intel will realize that the Itanium just isn't going to fly and they are going to do an x86-64 equivalent based on a fixed P4 core. Once they do that, AMD will be behind the curve, again. They will be in the position of chasing Intel without having the right to use the 64 bit extensions. And that will hurt.

It's just that many AMDites suffer from the scars of having been bullied over the years...as a result, there is a strong tendancy to compare worst case AMD scenario with best case INTC scenario in evaluating future outcomes...

It's difficult, it seems, to accept the new paradigm whereby between now and 2 years from now, it is highly likely that AMD will advance at a quicker pace than will INTC no matter what delays both suffer during the interim...i.e 2 years out AMD will have widened the existing gap!!!
