"Athlon will probably be at 1.6GHz when P4 is at 2GHz. The lead isn't widening. The difference is as meaningful as 1.6MHz vs. 2.0Mhz was 15 years ago."

it will definitely be a game of leapfrog. AMD claims the 1.5 GHz Palomino will ship at the end of this quarter, which means for all practical purposes, the 1.5 GHz Palomino and 2.0 GHz P4 will ship at the same time. AMD will then likely beat Intel with a 1.733 GHz Palomino before Intel's 2.2 GHz Northwood. Then, Palomino will be stuck at less than 0.75x the speed grade of Northwood throughout its life.

Thoroughbred might exceed 0.75x the speed grade of Northwood, but this is doubtful. More than likely, AMD will keep the peak speed grade of Thoroughbred at 0.75x the peak speed grade of Northwood.

Then, with the introduction of Barton, the peak speed grade of Athlon will probably creep closer to the peak speed grade of Northwood.
