People want to be different. Religion is a mechanism for people to be different. It is a mechanism to be better, holier, "saved", whatever- in a group. It is a driving force for people. It is not only the excuse, for many people it is their raison d'etre. Not that I can fault it- it just isn't me. I don't like it because it is so NOT me, it poses a threat to me. My ideas, though, and my very being, probably are very threatening to people with belief. Just by existing in happiness and peace I perturb the universe for them. Which pleases me no end.
