hi daffodil

i'll take a small stab at it. it certainly is baffling.

have you tried right-clicking the desktop and selecting 'refresh'?

if in fact it's the winme logo that is plaguing you, i've read that you can turn off the display of the startup logo altogether with TweakUI in control panel.

plus i found this short collection of posts that seem to pertain, but don't contain much...

computing.net

that's all i've got right now. waiting for the windows me users to roll on through to save you

please let us know if anything changes

[edit in: here's one more item for your review... "Adjust Display Options in Windows Me" microsoft.com
perhaps there's a setting in the Display Properties dialog that will free you of this annoyance.]

:)

daffodil, I have the same machine but with Win98SE and have never seen any icon like it. So maybe it's ME-related or AOL-related? Can you take a picture by pressing PrntScrn?
After that you can paste it into any word processor and save the document. Then you could e-mail it to tech support, mr. mark and me so we know exactly how the icon looks. Maybe we can even post it on a web site for all to see and maybe identify.

You might try double clicking the My Computer icon and then double click desktop and see if any shortcuts that you don't recognize are listed. If so, right click them and choose properties. On the shortcut tabs look for anything involving photos. Maybe look for something pertaining to the printer you installed. Have you clicked on any of the photos to see what happens? Another thought..right click the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and select toolbars and let us know what's listed there.
